Your pH test gives you the acidity or alkalinity of your soil on a scale of 0 to 14. Lower numbers are more acidic, higher numbers are more alkaline (also called basic), and pH 7 is neutral. An acceptable pH is critical to plants’ ability to absorb nutrients, and different plants have different pH requirements. If your pH is out of range for your lawn, all the fertilizer in the world will make no difference in your lawn’s health. Generally, lime is added to raise a pH that is too low, and a sulfur-containing fertilizer may be used to lower a pH that is too high.
