Liming is the application of lime to raise the pH of overly acidic soil. Most lawn grasses do best in soil with slightly acidic, near-neutral soil pH. Unsure what the best pH is for your soil? A soil test will reveal whether your lawn needs liming, what type of lime to use, and the volume of lime needed. Lime can be applied any time, but applying just before winter sets in will allow the freezing and thawing to better incorporate the material into the soil.
