What is loam?

All soils are a mixture of mineral particles (sand, silt, and clay) and organic matter. A loam is a soil with a good texture for growing grass and other plants based on its balance of sand, silt, and clay. Specifically, it will have 22.5-57.5% sand, 27.5-50% silt, and 7.5-27.5% clay. With proper care, this soil holds moisture well and can support a luscious green lawn.
