Native grasses are those grasses indigenous to a specific region. Native North American grasses include the prairie grasses that once covered major parts of what would become the United States. Most common U.S. lawn grasses are not native species. One exception is Buffalograss, now a popular native choice for natural lawns. Many popular ornamental garden grasses are native species, including switchgrass, big and little bluestem, and Indiangrass.
