Fescues are cool-season grasses that thrive in the northern half of the United States. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea, syn., Schedonorus arundinaceus and Lolium arundinaceum) has greater heat tolerance than other common cool-season lawn grasses, making it an excellent choice in the transition zone. With narrower blades, fine fescues have exceptional shade tolerance. They’re an essential ingredient in seed mixes for dense shade areas and lawns with mixed sun and shade.
