The carpet-like areas created by bentgrass have made it ideal for golf course greens in cool-season climates, but it is also sold as seed or sod for lawns. It spreads by above-ground runners (stolons). The three most common types are creeping (Agrostis stolonifera), velvet (Agrostis canina) and colonial (Agrostis capillaris), with creeping bent the most widely used for lawns and putting greens.
