Potassium (K) is a critical element of nearly every aspect of plant life (one of the big three fertilizer nutrients, NPK). To name a few of its functions, it facilitates movement of water and nutrients through the plant, it strengthens stems and roots, and it improves stress tolerance, including heat, drought, foot traffic and disease. Potassium also plays a key role in flower, fruit, and seed development, and is critical for overall plant health.
If your soil is deficient in potassium, your SoilKit recommendations may include muriate of potash, which has the chemical formula potassium chloride (KCl). North America's main sources of this critical agricultural amendment are the potassium salt mines in western Canada.
