Heat can be used to kill eggs and diseases in potting soil in a process known as pasteurization. The soil must reach above 180°F for at least 30 minutes, and then it can be used for potting. Click here to learn more about pasteurization and sterilization for your gardening supplies.
Please remember that this process will also remove many beneficial microbes that can benefit your plants. Methods such as pouring boiling water can be harmful to your lawn or garden and should not be used in outdoor areas.
