Plants that have been grown indoors, inside a greenhouse or under protection may need to be gradually acclimated to outside weather conditions through a process called "hardening off." This might involve moving the plants outdoors for a few hours during the middle of the day at first, and gradually increasing the time outside, so that when they are planted into the soil they are hardy enough to cope with varied weather conditions.
